Watch how it's done:

What's in your kit:

  • 3 Flat Headbands
  • 3 Spa-Style Headbands
  • 3 Barrettes
  • 3 Types of Yarn
  • 3 Bow Decor Clips
  • 3 Flower Decor Clips
  • 2 Bunny Ear Decor Clips
  • 2 Cat Ear Decor Clips
  • 2 Ribbons
  • 12 Headband Cloth Strips

Before You Begin

  • Set up your work area first. Lay down paper towels to catch drips and spills.
  • Lay out everything in the kit so it's all within reach before you begin.
  • Choose whether you want to decorate a flat plastic headband or a spa-style padded headband.
  • Pick the yarn color or colors you want to use.
  • Keep the headband cloth strips, ribbons, and decorative clips nearby for later.

Step 1: Wrap Your Headband

  • Start at one end of the headband.
  • Tie a simple knot with the yarn just above the tip of the headband.
  • Trim off any extra yarn tail.
  • Wrap the yarn tightly around the headband.
  • Keep each wrap close together so there are no gaps.
  • Continue wrapping until you reach the other end.
  • Gently push the yarn together as you work to keep the spacing neat and even.
  • Tie another knot just above the end of the headband.
  • Trim away any extra yarn.
  • Take one headband cloth strip and peel away the backing to reveal the sticky side.
  • Fold one cloth strip tightly around each end of the headband.
  • Press firmly to secure everything in place.

Style Tip: To use more than one yarn color, tie off the first color, trim the tail, then tie on another color. You can switch colors halfway through, make stripes, or create your own pattern.

Step 2: Add Decorative Hair Clips

  • Choose a Bunny Ear, Cat Ear, Bow, or Flower Decor Clip.
  • Slide the pointed end of the clip underneath the wrapped yarn.
  • Press down until the clip clicks into place.
  • Adjust the clip so it sits where you want it on the headband.

Tip: If the yarn is wrapped tightly, you may need to gently wiggle the clip underneath it.

Step 3: Add a Ribbon

  • Choose where you want the ribbon bow to sit on the headband.
  • Place the ribbon at that spot.
  • Bring both ends of the ribbon underneath the headband.
  • Pull the ends upward so both sides are even.
  • Make two loops, just like tying your shoelaces.
  • Tie the loops together to create a bow.
  • Gently pull the loops or tails until the bow looks even.

Tip: For a stronger hold, double-knot the ribbon underneath before tying the bow.

Step 4: Mix and Match Your Decorations

  • Combine different accessories however you like.
  • Add a flower, bow, bunny ears, cat ears, ribbon, or a combination of several decorations.
  • Adjust the placement until you are happy with your headband design.

Step 5: Customize the Metal Hair Barrettes

  • Choose one of the 3 metal hair barrettes.
  • Pick a leftover yarn color from your headband project.
  • Tie a knot at one end of the clip to secure the yarn.
  • Wrap the yarn tightly around the top section of the clip.
  • Keep each wrap close together, just as you did with the headband.
  • Continue wrapping until you reach the end of the section you want to cover.
  • Tie off the yarn on the underside of the clip.
  • Trim away any extra yarn.
  • Repeat with the other barrettes using different colors or patterns if desired.

Step 6: Finish Your Set

  • Check that the yarn, ribbons, cloth strips, and decorative clips are secure.
  • Make any final adjustments to your designs.
  • Your yarn headbands and matching hair clips are now ready to wear.
